What is Compass?
Compass is a compass app for your phone. Open it and a needle swings to north, with a soft tik at every notch it passes and a tap you can feel, the way a real compass would click if it had a dial of brass.
It does the useful things properly. It shows true north as well as magnetic (the difference is worked out on your phone from NOAA’s World Magnetic Model), points to Qibla from wherever you are, shows where the sun and moon are and when they rise and set, saves places like where you parked, and has a level and a magnetic field meter in it too.
It is made to be looked at. There are six skins, from a plush compass with a felt needle to a ship’s card and a blueprint, and six sets of sounds for the notches. Your location stays on your phone: Compass never sends where you are anywhere.
How Compass works
- 01
Open it and point
The needle finds north at once and settles like it has weight. The big number is where you are facing, and one tap switches between true north and magnetic.
- 02
Feel every notch
A tik and a tap at every notch the needle crosses, heavier at east, south and west, and heaviest at north. Choose how often, and which sound: click, watch, wood, ratchet, glass or safe.
- 03
Find what you are after
Point to Qibla from anywhere, lock a bearing to hold a course, or drop a pin where you parked and the compass points you back, with the distance.
- 04
See the sky
Where the sun and moon are now, which way to face for sunrise and sunset, daylight, first and last light, and the soft golden hours for photographs.
- 05
Level, field, height
Lay it flat for a bubble level, hold it to a wall for a line, read the magnetic field, find hidden metal by the tick, or read your height from the air pressure.

Questions about Compass
Does Compass work without an account or a connection?
Yes. The compass, true north, Qibla, the sun and moon, your places and the level all work offline and with no account. An account is only for Compass Plus, so it follows you to a new phone.
Does it send my location anywhere?
No. Where you are stays on your phone: true north, Qibla and the sun are worked out there, and the saved places are kept there. Our usage statistics, if you leave them on, never include a place.
Why does it ask for my location?
To work out true north (which differs from where a needle points by a few degrees, more in some places), to show your coordinates, and to find Qibla and the sun. An iPhone also shares its compass only with apps allowed to see its location. On Android the compass works without it.
How accurate is it?
As accurate as the sensor in your phone, which is good to a few degrees once calibrated. If it drifts, sweep the phone through a figure of eight, and keep it away from magnets, speakers and steel. The magnetic field screen shows when something is interfering.
What is the difference between true and magnetic north?
Magnetic north is where a compass needle points. True north is the geographic pole, which maps, the sun and Qibla are measured from. The angle between them is the declination, and Compass works it out for where you are, so you can read either.
What does Plus add?
Every skin and every sound, as many saved places as you like, and the sky planner with moonrise, moonset, first and last light and the golden hours. Free keeps the compass, Qibla, the level and the field and height tools.
Is there a web version?
No. Compass is an app for iPhone and Android, because a compass needs the compass in your phone. A browser or a computer has none.
How do I cancel Plus?
In your store’s subscription settings, or from your account in the app. The support page walks through it.
